Fairfield Leisure Centre

Fairfield Leisure Centre

Fairfield Leisure Centre underwent a major extension program in 2004, with the addition of a new gymnasium, shower area, administration offices and refurbishment of existing toilets. The centre is popular with youth, families, seniors and corporate clients in the Western Sydney suburb, and the extension was an opportunity to improve water conservation at the centre whilst also improving security for the centre’s amenities.

The project

Due to the extended water restrictions in NSW, the expansion of the leisure centre needed to ensure water-saving technology complied with Sydney Water requirements. New showering facilities had to manage water more efficiently whilst delivering safe tempered water. The centre also had a significant requirement for enhanced security, as the showering facilities at the council’s Prairiewood Leisure Centre had previously been exposed to acts of vandalism.

The solution

Thornthwaite met with the builders and council representatives to discuss the benefits of using Presto and Rada products as part of the development. As the project got underway, we continued to liase with the plumber, builder and electricians to advise on the installation of a complete shower room solution that would ultimately save water and prevent deliberate tampering.

We recommended the installation of our Rada Pulse System, used in conjunction with VR 105 shower fittings in the shower areas of the centre. The robust design of the shower fittings combined with Pulse 120 sensors is an ideal combination for high traffic but vulnerable areas.

As one of the key objectives for the project was to reduce water consumption, the showering system had to discourage users from taking extended showers.

The Rada Pulse system was set to shut the water flow off automatically after 2 minutes. Further savings were achieved in hand washing areas with Presto tapware. The plumber installed Presto 504 and Presto 605 taps – stylish in design to fit the new development, yet robust to prevent vandals from removing or damaging the wall-mounted fixtures. The Rada 320 thermostatic mixing valve was installed to provide safe warm water to multiple outlets.

Benefits

Fairfield Leisure Centre and associated fitness facility, Prairiewood, have both achieved extensive benefits from using Presto and Rada solutions in their washroom facilities. Sensor operated showers have resulted in less vandalism and have provided enhanced water conservation through timed flow management.
